9/2 Laugavegur Hike in Iceland Day 1

9/2 Laugavegur - 24K

At 8:00 AM I hopped the on the Reykjavik Excursions bus for the 4 hour drive to Landmannalaugar. I met a couple of German guys (Frank and Marco) getting off of the bus doing the hike as well, and decided to join them for what became the rest of the day. It usually takes people 3-4 days to do. The first part was the hardest as it climbed vertically to 1000 meters in the first 5 miles or so. The temperature was decent maybe 55 and sky was beautifully blue. We hit the first hut (Hraftntinnusker) at about 3:30 and they seemed ok, so we trudged on. The snow at this point became sloppy and the footing not very fun. We finally hit Alftavatn at about 7:30 or so and the last couple miles was all downhill. I could see how it was tough on some people that didn´t hike much. The accomodations were nice for being a hut! Warm water, beds, and toilets... what else do you need?
